“People desire to separate their worlds into polarities of dark and light, ugly and beautiful, good and evil, right and wrong, inside and outside. Polarities serve us in our learning and growth, but as souls we are all.”
~ Joy Page
The sky glowed a gorgeous purplish-red this morning, but I have yet to see the glow of the sun. Very apropos for how I am feeling today …
So just as Ghandi predicted, truth and love have won. The villains has been killed and captured. Yet I found the displays of patriotism in the streets to be highly distasteful. Was it just me?? Was the capture of the ‘terrorists’ truly cause for ‘celebration’ in the streets? As though the events of the past few days were like a sporting event ?!?!
Patriotism is divisive. Plain and simple. You versus Me.
If you did cheer, how did your heart feel? I promise you that it felt constrictive, not open. For this, I did not cheer …
My thoughts return to a commentary I read by Marilyn Manson following Columbine. Whose Fault is it?
Manson writes on Columbine: “I think it’s terrible when anyone dies, especially if it is someone you know and love. But what is more offensive is that when these tragedies happen, most people don’t really care any more than they would about the season finale of Friends or The Real World. I was dumbfounded as I watched the media snake right in, not missing a teardrop, interviewing the parents of dead children, televising the funerals. Then came the witch hunt … America loves to find an icon to hang its guilt on. In my work I examine the America we live in, and I’ve always tried to show people that the devil we blame our atrocities on is really just each one of us.”
M. Scott Peck, in his book The Road Less Traveled writes:
“The whole course of human history may depend on a change of heart in one solitary and even humble individual – for it is in the solitary mind and soul of the individual that the battle between good and evil is waged and ultimately won or lost.”
Compassion alone stands apart from the continuous traffic between good and evil proceeding within us. Remember, love thyself, and love thy neighbor, especially today if he or she happens to be ethnic. That was my grandparents once! I wasn’t born “American”. So no finger pointing, no nationalism, please!
As a friend wrote a few days ago … Om Shanti … Peace ♥
